Adam Erne produced the winning goal in the seventh round of the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the host Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Valtteri Filppula and Erne scored in regulation for the Red Wings. Larkin began the shootout with a tally.

Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov extended the shootout on the last chance of the first three rounds.

Martin Necas, Jordan Staal, Dougie Hamilton and Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes.

Besides the shootout winner, Erne also had Detroit's final goal in regulation, putting the Red Wings ahead briefly.

Aho's tally at the 4-minute mark was the last goal of regulation. It came shortly after the Hurricanes had a potential tying goal by Nino Niederreiter wiped out on video review because of goaltender interference with 5:13 remaining.

The game never had more than a one-goal margin. The Red Wings won for just the second time in their last seven games.

Thomas Greiss of the Red Wings made 30 saves. Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek stopped 24 shots.

The Hurricanes, wearing Hartford Whalers retro jerseys, are 3-1-1 on a scheduled eight-game homestand. They had a three-game winning streak end.

Necas, who had an empty-net goal to cap the Carolina scoring in its previous game, scored 1:38 into the Saturday's contest.

Larkin evened the score, with the puck knocked away by Mrazek for a save -- but right where Larkin was approaching the net, and it ended up a goal.

Mantha had the Red Wings in the lead for the first time. It was even again with 5:16 to play in the opening period, with Staal taking a long pass from Jordan Martinook for a transition goal.

Morgan Geekie left the puck for Hamilton inside the blue line, and the Hurricanes went up in the second period. The defenseman took it toward the net, firing the shot past Greiss.

Detroit's tying goal in the second period bounced in off Staal.

By allowing the fourth goal, it was the most goals allowed by Carolina since a 4-2 loss March 16 at Detroit.
