Red Wings 2, Rangers 1 (OT): Defenseman Marek Zidlicky scored a power-play goal 1:09 into overtime to highlight his debut with his new team as host Detroit skated to its third straight victory.

With Derek Stepan serving a holding penalty, the Red Wings kept up the pressure in the third period before scoring in the extra session. Acquired from New Jersey prior to the trade deadline on Monday, Zidlicky pinched in and chipped the puck off New York captain Ryan McDonagh and down the back of Cam Talbot (29 saves) before it trickled into the net.

Justin Abdelkader also tallied and Jimmy Howard turned aside 39 shots for Detroit, which moved within one point of second-place Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division. Captain Henrik Zetterberg recorded two assists in his return from a four-game absence due to an upper-body injury.

Defenseman Dan Girardi scored a power-play goal for the Rangers, who pulled even in points with the New York Islanders atop the Metropolitan Division despite falling for just the third time in 12 contests (9-1-2). Rick Nash and Derick Brassard each notched an assist on Girardi's third goal of the season.

Zetterberg made his presence felt with a nifty no-look backhand pass that caromed off the left skate of Abdelkader before skidding into the net at 6:12 of the first period. Officials deemed that Abdelkader did not use a distinct kicking motion and allowed the goal to stand, but the Rangers answered nearly 11 minutes later as Girardi extended his stick to tap home a loose puck in the crease.

The Rangers failed to convert a pair of golden opportunities to snap a 1-1 tie, as D Marc Staal hit the left post early in the second period and Nash was denied at the right doorstep midway into the third.
