Rangers 3, Red Wings 0: Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 30 shots to record his 300th NHL victory and tie Ed Giacomin for the franchise record with his 49th career shutout as host New York vaulted into second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Chris Kreider scored twice, Brian Boyle also tallied and Derek Stepan notched two assists to extend his point streak to six games. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh also registered two assists and Dominic Moore secured his 200th NHL point as the Rangers completed a sweep of the three-game season series against their Original Six rival and moved one point ahead of idle Philadelphia.
Lundqvist registered his fourth shutout of the campaign - including a 38-save performance in New York's 1-0 victory over visiting Detroit on Jan. 16. The Swedish Olympian sits one win shy of matching Mike Richter for first place in franchise history.
Boyle provided all the offense Lundqvist needed at 5:14 of the first period, when his turnaround shot from the high slot glanced off Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith and past New York native Jimmy Howard (28 saves).
Kreider scored 14 seconds into the third, deflecting McDonagh's shot from the point past Howard, and completed his second multi-goal effort of the season 12 minutes later with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. Kreider recorded a hat trick against former coach John Tortorella and Vancouver on Nov. 30.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stepan has recorded one goal and eight assists during his point streak while Rangers RW Mats Zuccarello saw his seven-game run come to an end. The Norwegian scored two goals and set up seven others during his point streak. ... Detroit, which went 0-for-3 on the power play, failed to score with the man advantage for the first time in six contests. ... New York D John Moore collected an assist for his second point in two games. He had been held off the scoresheet in his previous nine contests.
