Hurricanes 6, Senators 3: Manny Malhotra and Nathan Gerbe recorded three-point performances as Carolina continued its home dominance of Ottawa.
Malhotra scored twice, Tuomo Ruutu tallied for the first time since Dec. 10 while captain Eric Staal, Riley Nash and Gerbe also found the back of the net. Anton Khudobin made 23 saves for his third straight victory as the Hurricanes improved to 11-0-1 in their last 12 home contests against the Senators.
Kyle Turris scored twice and Mika Zibanejad added a goal for Ottawa, which suffered its second regulation loss in 12 games (7-2-3). Robin Lehner was pulled after allowing five goals on 22 shots in the first two periods.
Gerbe put a spinning shot between Lehner’s legs from a sharp angle 10:30 into the first period and Staal slid a forehand deke past the netminder on a partial breakaway 6:05 into the second. Malhotra tipped a centering feed from defenseman Andrej Sekera around Lehner 32 seconds later and Nash made it 4-0 with 6:37 remaining in the period.
Turris scored twice to trim the deficit, answering Nash’s tally 35 seconds later and scoring short-handed 3:47 after that. Ruutu and Zibanejad traded goals 10 seconds apart in the final minute of the middle session and Malhotra capped the scoring with an empty-net tally late in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Khudobin has made 11 straight appearances in net for Carolina since returning from an ankle injury. … Sekera and RW Alexander Semin each had two assists for the Hurricanes, extending their hot streaks. Semin has eight points on a five-game stretch while Sekera has six in his last three. … G Craig Anderson replaced Lehner in the third period and stopped all nine shots he faced.
