Lightning 2, Rangers 1: Defenseman Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov scored nine seconds apart in the second period to match the franchise record for the two fastest goals and visiting Tampa Bay held on to edge New York.
Ben Bishop returned from a four-game absence with a strained wrist to turn aside 33 shots and improve to 5-0-0 all time against the Rangers. Tampa Bay killed off two power plays in the third period, upping its record in the second of back-to-back games to 5-1-1.
Brad Richards scored the only goal for the Rangers in the first period as their five-game point streak came to an end. Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves to lose for only the second time in regulation over his last eight starts.
The Rangers took the lead 11:55 into the game when Richards snapped a low shot past Bishop from the bottom of the left circle after a pass from captain Ryan Callahan. Lundqvist stopped all nine shots he faced in the opening period, but gave up two in the first 1:19 of the second session.
Hedman hammered a low shot from the high slot just inside the right post on the power play at 1:10 to forge a tie. Defenseman Radko Gudas sprung Kucherov for a breakaway just after the ensuing faceoff and the rookie slid the puck under Lundqvist for his seventh goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The goals by Hedman and Kucherov equaled the record set by Dave Andreychuk and Fredrik Modin, who tallied nine seconds apart on Jan. 9, 2004 against New Jersey. … Richards, who was 16-5 in the faceoff circle, has eight points in his last six contests. …Tampa Bay C Nate Thompson was scratched due to illness and D Sami Salo missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury.
