Senators 6, Canadiens 1: Rookie Jean-Gabriel Pageau notched his first hat trick and host Ottawa broke Game 3 open with two goals in an eight-second span of the third period to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round series.

Captain Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and two assists and Craig Anderson turned aside 33 shots as the seventh-seeded Senators took control over the final two periods of a slugfest that featured 236 minutes in penalties. Game 4 will be played Tuesday night in Ottawa.

Kyle Turris and Jakob Silfverberg scored eight seconds apart in the third to turn it into a rout, with their goals sandwiching a flurry of fisticuffs that featured 10 fighting majors. Rene Bourque scored the lone goal for second-seeded Montreal while netminder Carey Price made 24 saves.

Alfredsson and Bourque traded power-play goals in the opening period before Pageau put the Senators ahead to stay. The rookie split the defense and snapped a shot past Price as he took a stick to the mouth from Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban that left him bloodied and minus a tooth.

Pageau, brought up from the minors in early April, struck again 78 seconds into the third, snapping a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle past Price glove side for a 3-1 edge. Turris made it 4-1 at the seven-minute mark, taking Alfredsson's pass from behind the net and sweeping it into the net to set off a raucous celebration and a 10-player donnybrook on the ensuing faceoff.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Canadiens captain Brian Gionta and forward Max Pacioretty both returned to the lineup after sitting out Game 2 with lower-body injuries. Gionta assisted on Bourque's goal but he was denied by Anderson on a backhander with just over 15 minutes to play and Montreal trailing 3-1. ... Senators D Patrick Wiercioch's first playoff appearance lasted under two minutes after suffering a lower-body injury. ... Alfredsson's goal was the first postseason power-play tally allowed by the Canadiens since the Eastern Conference finals in 2010.
