Jimmy Vesey scored in the fifth round of the shootout as the New York Rangers overcame a second-period collapse and recorded a 5-4 victory over the host Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

The Rangers won for the fifth time in six games (5-0-1) -- including three wins in a shootout and one in overtime -- thanks to Vesey, who scored his third career shootout goal in six tries. He gave New York the win by lifting a wrist shot off Joonas Korpisalo's glove and left arm.

Korpisalo was so infuriated with allowing the game-winner that he slammed his stick multiple times on the net.

Mika Zibanejad and Kevin Shattenkirk also tallied in the shootout, in a game the Rangers once led 3-1.

Cam Atkinson and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in the shootout for Columbus, which was unable to win a season-high third straight game.

Rangers backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev made 15 of his 34 saves after allowing three goals in a span of 4:14 in the second period. He then stopped Artemi Panarin, Anthony Duclair and Oliver Bjorkstrand in the shootout.

Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich, Chris Kreider and Vesey scored in regulation for the Rangers, who blew a two-goal lead for the second straight night.

Atkinson, Dubois, Nick Foligno and Alexander Wennberg tallied for the Blue Jackets.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead 5:54 into the game when Zibanejad and Buchnevich teamed up on a 2-on-1. Zibanejad forced a turnover near the blue line by Bjorsktrand, sped through the slot, and when Markus Nutivaara fell down, Buchnevich threaded a cross-ice pass through the slot and Zibanejad tapped into the vacated right side of the net.

Columbus tied it with 33.9 seconds left in the first by tiring the Rangers out on a power play. As the Rangers were unable to clear the defensive zone, Dubois threaded a pass around Neal Pionk's stick to Atkinson, who converted the easy tap-in into the vacated left side of the net.

The Rangers scored twice in a span of 93 seconds to take a 3-1 lead with 11 1/2 minutes left in the second, as Buchnevich finished off a 2-on-1 with Vesey, and Kreider tapped in a pass from Hayes.

Columbus came back with the next three goals, including two in 32 seconds as Dubois tipped a Seth Jones slap shot into the net, and Foligno finished off a 2-on-1 with Boone Jenner by backhanding the puck into the net with 7:39 left.

Columbus took its first lead while short-handed, when Wennberg put a wrist shot from the left circle by Georgiev with 3:57 left, but the Rangers tied it when Vesey converted Hayes' pass from behind the net with 52.8 seconds remaining.
