Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored the deciding goal in the third round of a shootout, and the host New York Rangers edged the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 Tuesday night.

Shattenkirk lifted a wrist shot over Semyon Varlamov's stick, giving the Rangers their second win in three games following a 0-3-0 start.

The Rangers clinched it when Henrik Lundqvist made a left pad save on Gabriel Landeskog.

Mats Zuccarello scored in the first round of the shootout for the Rangers, and Mikko Rantanen tallied in the second round for Colorado.

Nathan MacKinnon extended his season-opening goal-scoring streak to six games, breaking the franchise record set by Hall of Famer Mats Sundin with the 1992-93 Quebec Nordiques. He scored the tying goal late in the second period.

Chris Kreider scored in the first period and Kevin Hayes tallied in the second period for the Rangers.

Landeskog scored Colorado's first goal and recorded the primary assist on MacKinnon's seventh goal of the season.

Varlamov made a season-high 41 saves, including two point-blank stops on Mika Zibanejad and Jesper Fast during New York's power play in overtime. With 1:42 remaining in the extra period, he covered up Jimmy Vesey's attempt by stacking his right pad at the goal line.

Colorado nearly won it with about a minute remaining in overtime, but Landeskog had a shot clang off the left post.

New York took a 1-0 lead on its first power play with 7:53 left in the first when Kreider tipped in Shattenkirk's point shot over Varlamov. Lundqvist preserved the lead during Colorado's first power play with a sprawling save on Rantanen and a glove stop on MacKinnon.

The Rangers nearly went up 2-0 with about 14 minutes left in the second, but Varlamov made a pad save on Vesey's breakaway chance.

Colorado tied it on its second power play. Landeskog tipped a drive from near the blue line by Tyson Jost over Lundqvist with 11:47 left in the middle period, but the Rangers regained the lead less than three minutes later on Hayes' one-timer from above the left faceoff circle.

Colorado tied it with 12.6 seconds remaining in the second period when MacKinnon put a wrist shot under Landeskog's legs and over Lundqvist's glove.

Lundqvist made 31 saves.
