Dorian Thompson-Robinson rushed for a touchdown and passed for another, and Demetric Felton rushed for the game-winning touchdown with 1:09 left after UCLA surrendered a 17-point lead in a 25-18 Bruins win over Arizona State on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.
UCLA (3-2, 3-2 Pac-12 Conference) raced to a 17-0 lead in the first half on Thompson-Robinson's 9-yard scoring pass to Delon Hurt and his own 11-yard touchdown rush. An offensively anemic second half for the Bruins allowed Arizona State to surge to an 18-17 lead in the late fourth quarter.
Arizona State (0-2, 0-2) -- playing its first game since Nov. 7 due to COVID-19-related cancellations -- held UCLA scoreless for almost 30 minutes of game time until Felton's go-ahead rush. The Sun Devils finished their 18-0 run on quarterback Jayden Daniels' 1-yard touchdown run.
Daniels finished 21-of-35 passing for 225 yards and gained a net of six rushing yards after taking five sacks.
The last of UCLA's five sacks came on Arizona State's last-ditch effort to force overtime. After missing a potential sack on the previous play -- negated due to offsetting penalties, part of the 17 combined flags thrown on the night -- Caleb Johnson brought Daniels down on a blind-side rush for an eight-yard loss.
Johnson's play forced a desperation, fourth-down heave that Quentin Lake batted down to preserve the UCLA win. The victory moved the Bruins above .500 for the first time in coach Chip Kelly's three seasons with the program.
The 18-0 Sun Devils scoring streak began late in the second quarter. D.J. Taylor's 42-yard kickoff return advanced another 15 yards when UCLA was called for tripping. Jack Luckhurst converted a 49-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half.
Arizona State then scored its first touchdown of the night on its initial possession after halftime. The Sun Devils ran a double-pass in which receiver Ricky Pearsall caught behind the line of scrimmage, then found Rachaad White for a 51-yard gain.
The trick play helped set up Daniels' 10-yard scoring pass to Frank Darby.
Another promising Arizona State drive ended in the first of two Sun Devils turnovers committed in UCLA territory, with a fumbled snap recovered just shy of the goal line.
Jay Shaw came through with the second Bruins takeaway. His pick of a Daniels deep ball in the end zone marked just the third interception thrown in the Sun Devils quarterback's college career.
DeaMonte "Chip" Trayanum rushed for 108 yards for Arizona State. Brittain Brown gained 94 yards on seven carries to pace UCLA.
