Texas Tech 61, Stephen F. Austin 13: Freshman Baker Mayfield threw for three touchdowns and Kenny Williams ran for two scores as the Red Raiders dominated the visiting Lumberjacks.
Inclement weather delayed the kickoff, but the Red Raiders (2-0) got to work immediately as they scored 52 seconds into the contest on Mayfield's 42-yard swing pass to Jakeem Grant. Texas Tech scored four TDs in the first quarter, including 1- and 18-yard runs by Williams, and tied a school record with 28 first-quarter points.
Mayfield completed 21-of-30 passes for 367 yards, hitting tight end Jace Amaro for a 25-yard score and Bradley Marquez for a 60-yard TD in the first half. Amaro caught eight passes for 142 yards while Marquez pulled down two for a career-high 94 yards as the Red Raiders mounted a 45-7 halftime lead.
The Lumberjacks (0-2) surprised the Red Raiders in the first quarter with a reverse as Tyler Boyd threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to fellow wide receiver Mike Brooks. Backup quarterback Joe Minden hooked up with Marquis Mosley for a 36-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
With a Thursday contest against No. 24 Texas Christian looming, Mayfield and several other starters exited the game after halftime, making way for freshman quarterback Davis Webb, who made his collegiate debut. Webb connected with classmate Reginald Davis for a 23-yard scoring pass in the third quarter but was also intercepted twice.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas Tech improved to 17-1 all-time against FCS opponents. ... Sophomore DeAndre Washington and freshman Quinton White had short scoring runs and kicker Ryan Bustin nailed a 28-yard field goal for Texas Tech. ... Minden was called for a safety in the third quarter.
