Colorado 35, Washington State 34: Jordan Webb scored on a 4-yard keeper with 11 seconds remaining to cap a 21-point fourth-quarter splurge as visiting Colorado stunned Washington State in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The Buffaloes (1-3, 1-1 Pac-12) trailed 31-14 midway through the final quarter before Webb connected on a 70-yard scoring pass to Nick Kasa with 7:06 remaining and Tony Jones broke free on an 84-yard touchdown scamper with 4:23 left.
Washington State (2-2, 0-1) received 401 yards and four touchdown passes from Connor Halliday but was unable to pull off a game-ending goal-line stand as Webb took a shotgun snap and scored on a fourth-down run. Webb passed for a career-high 345 yards and two touchdowns, and also scored two rushing touchdowns.
Marquess Wilson caught two touchdown passes, including a 49-yarder in the third quarter, as the Cougars built the 31-14 lead. Halliday threw first-half touchdown passes of 32 yards to Gabe Marks, 23 yards to Wilson and 15 yards to Isiah Myers.
Webb tossed a 16-yard scoring pass to Nelson Spruce in the first half for the Buffaloes, who rebounded from a 69-14 loss to Fresno State last Saturday.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Halliday, a sophomore, started for the second straight game ahead of Jeff Tuel, who injured a knee against Eastern Washington on Sept. 8. Halliday has thrown 17 touchdown passes in seven career games. … The victory was Colorado’s second road win in Jon Embree’s two seasons as coach. … Wilson caught five passes for 99 yards and moved into second place in school history with 2,710 receiving yards, passing Jason Hill (2,704 from 2003-06). Brandon Gibson (2005-08) holds the school record of 2,756.
