Matt Barkley matched a school record with five touchdown passes and Southern Cal improved to 3-0 with a 38-17 victory over visiting Syracuse on Saturday.
Barkley had 324 yards and threw touchdown passes to five different receivers while tying the school record for touchdowns in a game for the third time in his career.
Syracuse (2-1) was within 24-10 in third quarter when Barkley threw his fourth touchdown, a 43-yard strike to Marqise Lee. The lead grew to 38-10 when Barkley connected with Xavier Grimble on a 9-yard pass early in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans were ahead 24-3 after the opening possession of the second half as Barkley teamed with Randall Telfer on a 44-yard scoring pass.
Syracuse scored a touchdown on a trick play in the third quarter, a double-pass play in which Van Chew made a diving grab of a 28-yard left-handed rainbow toss by receiver Alec Lemon. The Orange also found the end zone when Lemon caught a 12-yard pass from Ryan Nassib in the fourth.
Barkley tossed two first-half touchdown passes - a 5-yarder to Rhett Ellison and a 31-yard aerial to Robert Woods - that gave the USC a 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Andre Heidari’s 26-yard field goal gave the Trojans a 17-3 halftime lead.
