It took nearly 30 years, but Scott Stadium is no longer North Carolina’s own personal house of horrors.
Quarterback T.J. Yates passed for all three of his touchdowns in the first half as the Tar Heels thumped host Virginia 44-10 on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
North Carolina had lost 14 straight at Virginia. It last won there in 1981.
Yates completed 17-of-22 passes for 329 yards as UNC (4-2, 2-1 ACC) extended its winning streak to four. Yates connected on 12 of his 16 first-half attempts for 252 yards as Carolina stormed to a 27-10 halftime lead.
Wide receiver Dwight Jones caught seven balls for 199 yards and two touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring strike on the game’s first play from scrimmage.
Struggling Virginia quarterback Marc Verica accounted for three of his team’s five interceptions, and was sacked twice before being benched in the third period.
The Cavaliers (2-4, 0-3) have lost three straight, and have yet to beat a Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) opponent this season.
