Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder endured one of the worst outings of his career, but did enough things right to lead Florida State past upset-minded Boston College, 24-19, on Saturday afternoon.
The overwhelming preseason pick for the ACC Player of the Year tossed for two touchdowns but matched his career-high turnover total with three costly interceptions and a fumble to help the Eagles stay close. Ponder, however, was savvy enough down the stretch to direct the 17th-ranked Seminoles to their fifth consecutive victory.
The FSU defense limited the Eagles to 3-of-15 on third-down conversions to improve to 4-0 in the ACC for the first time since 2004.
The ‘Noles took the lead for good when Bert Reed took a reverse 42 yards for a touchdown to make the score 24-19 with 10:50 left.
BC, which has been mired by poor quarterback play all season, got little relief from its third different player to start under center this season. Freshman Chase Rettig managed just 35 yards passing in the first half and 95 overall as the Eagles dropped their fourth consecutive game.
