Ryan Katz passed for a career-high 398 yards against the nation’s second-ranked defense, helping visiting Oregon State to a 29-27 victory over No. 11 Arizona in Pac-10 play on Saturday night.
Katz and the Beavers (3-2, 2-0) scored more touchdowns (four) than the Wildcats (4-1, 1-1) had given up (three) over their first four games. It was the fifth straight time Oregon State has beaten Arizona in Tucson.
Katz threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to James Rodgers and 48 yards to Markus Wheaton as Oregon State took a 17-7 halftime lead. Katz also scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter.
Arizona quarterback Nick Foles passed for 399 yards and two touchdowns. He tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Juron Criner and a 12-yarder to Keola Antolin, the latter score pulling Arizona within 29-27 with 1:52 remaining.
The Wildcats also scored second-half touchdowns on Antolin’s 33-yard run and Nic Grigsby’s 41-yard run.
Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers scored on a one-yard run with 5:46 left in the game to push the Beavers’ lead to nine shortly after Grigsby’s score.
Arizona had 540 yards and Oregon State had 483.
Oregon State star receiver James Rodgers had seven receptions for 102 yards before leaving the game late in the second quarter with a knee injury.
Arizona’s Criner caught 12 passes for 180 yards.
