The Texas Longhorns spent most of the first half of Saturday’s game against the Wyoming Cowboys doing their best to not impress the 100,000-plus fans on hand for the Horns’ home opener.
Before the fourth-ranked Longhorns finally subdued the Cowboys from the Mountain West Conference 34-7, they endured some of the same inconsistent play that dogged them in the ugly win over Rice last week.
The Horns (2-0) led 3-0 after the first quarter. But before building a 20-7 halftime, the Horns trailed 7-6 midway through the second quarter.
Texas opened up a comfortable cushion after running back Cody Johnson rumbled in from 2 yards out to make it 27-7 at 12:58 in the third and were never seriously challenged. Johnson added a second rushing TD in the fourth quarter.
Wyoming (1-1) was playing less than a week after freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse was killed in a crash near the Wyoming-Colorado border that also injured three teammates.
UT quarterback Garrett Gilbert (22-of-35, 222 yards, TD), struggled with the deep ball, but managed the offense without any major mistakes.
