Iowa 71, Maryland 60: Roy Devyn Marble scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes into Thursday night's National Invitation Tournament championship game at Madison Square Garden.
Eric May finished with 12 points and Aaron White added 10 points and eight rebounds for Iowa (25-12), which advanced to the NIT title game for the first time in school history. The Hawkeyes will face Baylor (24-12), a 76-70 winner in Tuesday night's first semifinal game over Brigham Young.
Sophomore center Alex Len scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a career-high six shots and guard Nick Faust added 14 points for Maryland (25-13).
Iowa dominated much of the first half, forcing 11 Maryland turnovers which the Hawkeyes turned into 18 points en route to a 33-19 lead. But the Terrapins settled down after that and thanks to a pair of late 3-pointers by Logan Aronhalt, closed to within 38-33 at halftime.
Maryland got as close as 49-45 on a Faust 3-pointer with 11:57 remaining, but Iowa switched to a 2-3 zone after that and went on a 7-0 run capped by a Marble layup. Maryland didn't get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was a preview of future Big Ten matchups between the two schools. Maryland leaves the ACC to join the Big Ten starting in 2014. ... Marble has scored 137 points in six NIT games over the last two seasons, a 22.9 average. ... Maryland, which won the 1972 NIT title, fell to 14-7 all-time in the tourney.
