No. 1 Duke 73, North Carolina 68: Quinn Cook and Mason Plumlee scored 18 points apiece as the Blue Devils withstood a determined effort by the visiting Tar Heels.
Duke (22-2, 9-2 ACC) trailed by four at halftime and didn't take its first lead until Seth Curry hit a 3-pointer with 14:10 remaining to put the Blue Devils ahead 42-41. After North Carolina’s P.J. Hairston answered with two free throws, the Blue Devils went on a 12-4 run and never trailed again.
Hairston had 23 points and Reggie Bullock made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for North Carolina (16-8, 6-5), which shot 13-of-23 from the foul line. Dexter Strickland added 14 points for the Tar Heels.
After allowing 15 3-pointers in an 87-61 loss to Miami last Saturday, the Tar Heels held Duke to one 3-pointer in the first half. The Blue Devils rediscovered their form in the second half, when they shot 52 percent and made five of their 12 attempts from 3-point range.
Strickland hit two free throws to cut the lead to 65-61 with 1:15 left, but the Blue Devils hit eight straight free throws to remain unbeaten (13-0) in Cameron Indoor Stadium this season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Plumlee had a game-high 11 rebounds for Duke, which has won six of the last eight meetings in the series. …. North Carolina freshman PG Marcus Paige was held to four points on 2-for-9 shooting. …Four Duke starters finished with four fouls.
