No. 14 Ohio State 56, No. 2 Michigan 53: DeShaun Thomas led the way with 20 points as the host Buckeyes handed the rival Wolverines their first setback.
Aaron Craft scored nine points and played strong defense on All-American candidate Trey Burke for Ohio State (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten), which went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 12 seconds to clinch the victory.
Burke finished with 15 points on 4-for-13 shooting and Tim Hardaway Jr. managed 12 on 5-for-15 as Michigan (16-1, 3-1) became the last Division I team to suffer a loss.
The Buckeyes came out with a strong intensity on the defensive end and allowed only three field goals over the first 15 minutes while forcing eight turnovers. The lead was as large as 29-8 before the Wolverines made a brief run to close to within 34-22 at the half.
Michigan chipped away in the second half and used a 13-2 burst to finally draw even at 46-46 on Glenn Robinson III’s 3-pointer with 5:58 left. But Ohio State came alive on both ends at that point, scoring on each of its next three possessions while holding Michigan to long, contested jumpers at the other end to pull back ahead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Wolverines entered Sunday fourth in the nation in team field goal percentage at 51.4 percent. They shot 38.3 percent against the Buckeyes, including 6-for-20 from 3-point range. … Michigan G Nik Stauskas came in averaging 13.5 points and shooting 52.3 percent from beyond the arc. He finished scoreless and went 0-for-3 from 3-point range. … Ohio State improved to 147-13 at home under head coach Thad Matta.
