Pittsburgh 66, Duquesne 45: Tray Woodall scored a season-high 24 points as the Panthers cruised past the Dukes in the “City Game” for the 12th straight time.
Lamar Patterson chipped in with 13 points while freshman Steven Adams added eight points and career-high 14 rebounds – including nine on the offensive end – for Pittsburgh (8-1), which has defeated Duquesne (4-4) in 31 of the last 34 meetings.
The Panthers would not trail again after giving up the opening basket, taking the lead for good on a layup by Talib Zanna with 7:52 remaining in the first half. Pittsburgh held the Dukes scoreless for a 6:13 stretch as it rolled off the next nine points - starting with Zanna's basket - to break open a tie game.
Woodall closed the first half with the Panthers’ final eight points and opened the second with a 3-pointer to give Pittsburgh a double-digit advantage it would build upon for the remainder of the contest.
Sean Johnson had 13 points and was the only player to score more than six for the Dukes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Woodall’s five 3-pointers on eight attempts matched the number of made 3-pointers from the entire Duquesne team on 21 attempts. … The Dukes have dropped 20 straight games against Big East opponents. … Adams, who was selected as the Big East’s freshman of the year in the preseason, more than doubled his previous high of six rebounds against Howard on Nov. 27.
