Penn State 65, St. Francis 58: Tim Frazier scored a game-high 23 points as the host Nittany Lions pulled away late and defeated the Red Flash in their season opener.
Frazier, a senior guard, made 17 of 18 free throws and dished out five assists while sophomore guard D.J. Newbill added 15 points and seven assists in his Penn State debut.
The Nittany Lions shot 87.5 percent from the foul line and outrebounded St. Francis 38-22. Red Flash sophomore guard Ollie Jackson scored a team-high 19 points.
Penn State entered halftime with a 26-20 lead, but St. Francis guard junior forward Kam Ritter made a layup 8:20 into the second half to give the Red Flash a 43-42 lead. A 3-pointer from Penn State senior guard Nick Colella 1:13 later - his only points of the game - put the Nittany Lions up four and started an 18-7 run which lasted 10:43 of the final 11:40.
The Red Flash scored nine of the last 13 points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sophomore forward Ross Travis added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Nittany Lions. … Ritter finished with nine points on 4-for-4 shooting before fouling out in 24 minutes of playing time. … Excluding Frazier, Penn State recorded only two assists while turning the ball over 14 times. … The Nittany Lions were 3-for-24 on 3-point attempts
