PITTSBURGH 71, WASHINGTON STATE 65: Tray Woodall scored 17 points and handed out seven assists Friday as the Panthers won the best-of-three College Basketball Invitational series.
The Panthers (22-17) lost the first game of the series, but recovered to win the next two at home. Pitt broke open a 44-44 game left with a 12-2 run to distance itself from the Cougars.
Pitt also got 14 points and eight rebounds from Lamar Patterson. Talib Zanna scored 12 points, the fifth time he’s been in double figures over the last six games after accomplishing the feat only four times during the regular season. J.J. Moore added 11 points and Nasir Robinson scored 10.
Washington State (19-18) got 18 points and five assists from Reggie Moore, 12 points from Mike Ladd and 10 points from DaVonte Lacy.
Pitt led 38-35 at halftime as Woodall and Patterson each scored nine points. The Panthers took advantage of Washington State’s mistakes and scored seven of their points off turnovers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pitt is now 13-22 all-time against Pac-12 schools. ... Both teams shot the ball well; Washington State shot 52.5 percent, Pitt 50 percent. ... Each team made only four 3-pointers. ... Washington State committed nine turnovers and Pitt committed only three.
