Massachusetts 77, Seton Hall 67: Chaz Williams collected 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Terrell Vinson hit a key 3-pointer as the Minutemen knocked off the top-seeded Pirates and advance to the third round of the NIT.
Raphiael Putney scored 15 points and Sean Carter chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds for No. 5 seed Massachusetts (24-11), which will face either Drexel or Northern Iowa in the next round.
The Minutemen led by as much as 34-22 late in the first half before Seton Hall (21-13) closed the gap to 36-30 at the break. The Pirates wasted little time cutting it all the way down in the second half and neither school managed more than a four-point lead until the 1:38 mark.
It was 65-64 in favor of Massachusetts when it began to swing the Minutemen’s way. A turnover by Seton Hall led to a 3-pointer from Williams, pushing it to a four-point cushion. The Pirates called timeout but could not draw up a basket, instead turning it over again.
Vinson made them pay, taking a feed from Williams and draining another 3-pointer. A third consecutive turnover led to free throws for Williams and Massachusetts sealed it at the line.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seton Hall seniors Herb Pope and Jordan Theodore combined for 23 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists in their final college game … Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates with 21 points … The teams combined to shoot 10 for 45 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range.
