Arizona State missed a chance to tie the score at the free-throw line with five seconds remaining, helping DePaul escape with a 68-64 win in the fifth-place game of the Old Spice Classic on Sunday in Orlando. It was arguably the biggest win tallied by the program since Oliver Purnell took over as coach in 2010.
Cleveland Melvin’s 16 points led the Blue Demons (4-1), who won two of three contests at the holiday tournament. Both victories came against teams from BCS conferences. DePaul beat Texas Tech 76-70 on Friday in the consolation round.
DePaul led for nearly the entire game but Arizona State made it interesting late. Trailing 62-52 at the final media timeout, the Sun Devils went on a run to close the gap to 64-62 with 1:18 remaining. The Sun Devils never caught up to the Blue Demons but got a golden chance when Jordan Bachynski went to the line with five seconds left and DePaul clinging to a 66-64 lead. Bachynski missed the first shot and ASU got whistled for a lane violation on the second.
Melvin was fouled and hit two free throws to ice the win. He was joined in double figures by Brandon Young (13 points) and Moses Morgan (12 points). DePaul made eight 3-pointers and won despite getting outrebounded 40-26.
Turnovers killed the Sun Devils, who committed 19 giveaways. Keala King poured in 22 points to lead Arizona State, which also got 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds from Trent Lockett.
