Mason Plumlee collected 17 points and 12 rebounds and Tyler
Thornton came off the bench to hit two key 3-pointers as No. 6 Duke won the EA
Sports Maui Invitational with a 68-61 victory over No. 14 Kansas on Wednesday.
Ryan Kelly added 17 points for the Blue Devils (7-0), who
won the tournament for the fifth time in school history. They have never lost
in Maui, improving to 15-0.
The lead changed 16 times, most dramatically in the final
three minutes when Andre Dawkins hit a 3-pointer to put Duke on top only to
have Elijah Johnson answer for Kansas with 1:33 to play. That’s when Thornton
took over, getting a pass from Kelly and stepping into a 3-pointer to put the Blue
Devils back on top, 63-61.
Jayhawks senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor committed his
11th turnover of the night on the other end and Thornton got another chance,
burying a 3-pointer from the right side with a hand in his face as the shot
clock was winding down.
Thornton was brought in for defense and stayed on the court
ahead of freshman phenom Austin Rivers.
Thomas Robinson recorded his fifth double-double in as many
games with 16 points and 15 rebounds for Kansas (3-2).
