Sean Kilpatrick hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left as visiting Cincinnati posted an impressive 70-67 upset of No. 11 Connecticut Wednesday.
Kilpatrick finished with 16 points, and there was no bigger shot than his 3-pointer from the top of the key seconds after the Huskies’ Shabazz Napier tied it with an off-balance three.
After a timeout, Niels Giffey’s three-quarter court heave clanged off the back rim as time expired.
Cashmere Wright scored 13 points and Yancy Gates added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Bearcats (15-4, 5-1 Big East). Cincinnati hit 11 3-pointers and survived a furious rally to hold on for its seventh straight Big East road win.
It was also the Bearcats’ 10th win in 11 games since an early-December brawl with crosstown rival Xavier. They showed their mettle after letting a nine-point halftime lead slip away, then squandering an eight-point lead in the final two minutes.
A 10-0 run gave Cincinnati a 65-57 lead with 1:35 left, but the Bearcats left the door open by missing four of their next six free throws. Napier hit three 3-pointers in 90 seconds –including the off-balance game-tying bomb with 10 seconds left. The sophomore finished with 27 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Jeremy Lamb added 14 points for the Huskies (14-4, 4-3), who were without freshman guard Ryan Boatright for a second straight game. Boatright's eligibility is in question again after he was suspended for the first six games for receiving impermissible benefits while playing for an AAU team.
