Josh Smith returned to the lineup and host UCLA finished the first half on a 19-6 run to erase a 10-point lead and never trailed again on the way to a 75-58 victory over shorthanded Arizona State on Saturday in Anaheim, Calif.
Smith, who missed Thursday’s game with concussion-like symptoms, scored a game-high 18 points to lead UCLA (7-7, 2-2 Pac-12) to its second straight win. UCLA got 16 points from Travis Wear and led by as much as 25 in the second half.
Arizona State played without three suspended players including leading scorer Keala King. The trio was suspended by the team for unacceptable conduct and did not make the trip to Southern California. King, fellow starter Kyle Cain and reserve guard Chris Colvin did not play leaving Arizona State with only six scholarship players.
The Sun Devils (5-10, 1-2) beat USC with the same squad but ran out of gas against the Bruins who took a double-digit lead early in the second half to improve to 4-0 at the Honda Center.
The Sun Devils were led by Jonathan Gilling with 17 points. Trent Lockett had a dozen.
