Robbie Hummel notched his first double-double of the season and was one of six players scoring in double figures as host Purdue cruised to a 81-56 victory over IPFW on Tuesday.
Coming off a crushing last-second loss to Butler last weekend, the Boilermakers (10-3) went on a 22-2 run midway through the first half and never let up in ending the Mastodons' five-game winning streak.
Hummel recorded the 15th double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds and had thunderous tip-dunk at the first-half buzzer as Purdue enjoyed a 50-23 lead at halftime. The Boilermakers shot 70 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
Ryne Smith led the Boilermakers with 12 points, Anthony Johnson and D.J. Byrd added 11, while Hummel, Kelsey Barlow, and Lewis Jackson each had 10.
Purdue tuned up for its Big Ten Conference opener next week against Iowa by outrebounding IPFW 39-30 and holding the Mastodons to 34.4 percent shooting.
Freshman Joe Edwards scored a career-high 12 points to pace IPFW (7-4), which is now winless in 19 games against Big Ten teams. Trey McCorkle added 10 points while Frank Gaines, the 11th leading scorer in the nation coming in at 21.4 points, was held to nine on 2-11 shooting.
