Stallon Saldivar scored a career-high 24 points, including a 3-pointer with six-tenths of a second remaining, to give Northern Arizona a stunning 69-68 victory over host Arizona State Saturday.
After Arizona State’s Trent Lockett made one of two free throws with 18 seconds left, Saldivar took a pass from James Douglas, moved to his left away from a defender to create space and swished his sixth 3-pointer of the game.
Douglas finished with 18 points and Durrell Norman scored a career-high 16 for the Lumberjacks (4-7), who improved to 2-0 under interim coach Dave Brown and won their first road game of the season after six losses.
Keala King had 16 points, seven assists and five steals, and Chanse Creekmur scored 15 –all on 3-pointers – for the Sun Devils (4-6), who didn’t trail in the second half until Salvidar’s shot and lost despite shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.
Arizona State scored nine of the game’s first 11 points and led by as many as eight in the first half. The Sun Devils shot 53.8 percent and were 5-for-8 from 3-point range, but committed 10 turnovers and led only 34-31 at the break.
Northern Arizona won the previous meeting between the two teams, coming out with a 75-71 victory on Nov. 13, 2006. That game was Herb Sendek’s first as Sun Devils coach.
