Reggie Moore hit the go-ahead basket with one second remaining as Washington State edged host Idaho 66-64 on Wednesday in the 267th edition of the “Battle of the Palouse.”
Moore scored a team-high 15 points and Brock Motum added 12 for the Cougars (5-4), who secured the 1,500th win in school history. It came against their border rival – a team they have played in each of the last 107 years in the longest running rivalry west of the Mississippi River.
Washington State, which was coming off a pair of blowout wins, looked to be on its way to another when it held Idaho to 30 percent shooting in the first half and took a 10-point advantage into intermission.
However, the Vandals (4-4) opened the second half with a 20-10 run that knotted the game at 45 at the 11:31 mark. Each team swapped baskets before the Cougars took the lead when Moore ignited a 7-0 run with a layup.
Idaho managed to tie the game at 64 on a jumper by Landon Tatum with 32 seconds remaining, but following a timeout, Moore hit a long jumper from the left baseline to seal the Vandals’ fate.
Stephen Madison paced the Vandals with 18 points.
