Durand Scott overcame poor field goal shooting with a career-best performance from the foul line as Miami held on to defeat visiting Massachusetts 83-75 on Saturday.
Scott missed all six of his shots from the field, but hit 16 of his 18 foul shots while adding five rebounds and six assists for Miami (5-2), who won its 27th consecutive non-conference home game and will attempt to continue that streak when they host No. 21 Memphis on Tuesday.
Malcolm Grant scored 15 points and Trey McKinney Jones added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Trailing 26-25 late in the first half, the Hurricanes scored 14 unanswered points over a three minute stretch to take command of a back-and-forth contest.
The Minutemen (6-3) shot just 37.5 percent for the game, but converted 16 of 20 free throws in the second half as they rallied to within three points on multiple occasions.
However, Miami hit its free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Chaz Williams led all scorers with 22 points for UMass.
