Myck Kabongo scored a team-high 16 points and Texas continued its dominance over visiting North Texas with a 73-57 victory Tuesday.
Kabongo, a freshman guard, reached double figures for the third time in the last five games for the Longhorns, who improved to 30-5 all-time against the Mean Green, a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
Texas (4-2) led 38-28 at halftime and extended its advantage to 59-42 midway through the second half on a pair of Kabongo free throws.
The Mean Green cut the deficit to 11 with 8:47 left, but the Longhorns quickly extended the lead to 16 to put the game out of reach.
Kabongo also had seven assists and finished 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Jonathan Holmes had 12 points and six rebounds for the Longhorns, who lost all five starters from last year’s team. J’Covan Brown, who came in averaging a team-high 23.2 points, finished with six points on 3-of-10 shooting.
Alzee Williams had a game-high 17 points for North Texas, which lost its eighth straight game against the Longhorns and fell to 1-7 against Big 12 opponents since 2008.
Roger Franklin came off the bench to score 13 for the Mean Green (1-4), who have lost four straight after a season-opening win against St. Gregory’s.
