Matt Gatens scored 22 points and Iowa snapped a two-game losing streak by holding off IPFW 82-72 on Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Hawkeyes (4-2), coming off double digit losses to Creighton and Campbell this week, led most of the first half by double digits and by 10 at halftime, 39-29.
IPFW (2-2) made several runs in the second half and got as close as three, 59-56 with 8:15 remaining, before Iowa held on.
Joining Gatens in double digits for the Hawkeyes were Bryce Cartwright and Zack McCabe with 12 points each, and Roy Devyn Marble with 11.
Iowa shot 55 percent from the field (28-51) and forced the visiting Mastodons into a season-high 24 turnovers, scoring 33 points off those mistakes.
Frank Gaines, who led the Summit League in scoring (22.3) coming into the game, scored a game-high 25 points for IPFW before fouling out in the final minute.
Trey McCorkle added 12 points and eight rebounds despite foul trouble, and Mario Hines came off the bench to chip in 12 points and six rebounds. IPFW still has never beaten a team from the Big Ten Conference, losing for the 18th straight time.
