Helped by a huge second-half run and Anthony Jones’ game-high 21 points, No. 10 Baylor shook off a slow start en route to a 70-50 victory over visiting South Carolina State on Tuesday.
The Bears improved to 4-0 for the fifth straight year and also won their 22nd straight non-conference home game.
Jones had 13 first-half points but received little help from his teammates as Baylor struggled to gain any separation against the Bulldogs (3-2), picked to finish 10th in the 13-team MEAC. The Bears led just 33-28 at halftime.
But Baylor came out strong in the second half, hitting five of its first seven shots and using a 14-0 run to build a 47-28 lead with 15:57 left. South Carolina State didn’t score its first second-half basket until the 13:08 mark after misfiring on five shots and committing seven turnovers.
Jones, who came in averaging 13 points and seven rebounds, went 9-of-14 from the field and made three 3-pointers. Pierre Jackson had 11 off the bench and Quincy Acy finished with nine points and eight rebounds for the Bears, who have two more games left on their season-opening six-game homestand.
Brandon Riley had a team-high 13 points for South Carolina State, which will play eight of its next nine games on the road, including three against major conference opponents. Khalif Toombs added 12 and Omar Samuels had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
South Carolina State finished with 22 turnovers.
