Tony Mitchell collected 17 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks and No. 15 Alabama put together a dominating defensive performance in a 62-42 victory over Maryland in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Thursday.
Trevor Releford added 10 points for the Crimson Tide (3-0), who will play the winner of Colorado vs. Wichita State on Friday.
Alabama held the Terrapins to 25 percent (12-of-48) shooting, including 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Crimson Tide cleaned up on the glass as well, building up a 44-28 rebounding advantage.
Alabama was so strong on the defensive end that the struggles of star JaMychal Green and highly-touted freshman Trevor Lacey were not a factor. The two combined for 12 points on 3-of-12 shooting.
Maryland (1-1) suffered its first loss under new head coach Mark Turgeon, who took over for Gary Williams last spring.
The Terrapins struggled badly in the first half and never recovered. Star Terrell Stoglin went 0-of-9 from the floor in the contest.
Maryland did not have a player score in double figures.
