Second-ranked Kentucky was able to shake off a slow start with a second-half burst and cruise to a 75-65 victory over No. 13 Kansas in a matchup of the two winningest programs in Division I history Tuesday in the State Farm Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden.

The first meeting between the storied programs since the second round of the 2007 NCAA tournament was tied at 28 after a sloppy first half by both teams. The young Wildcats (2-0) heated up after halftime, though, making their first five shots of the second half and opening on a 13-2 run. After shooting 38.5 percent (10 of 26) in the first half, the Wildcats shot 66.7 percent (16 for 24) in the second half.

Kentucky's lead grew as large as 17 points when Doron Lamb hit three 3-pointers within a span of three minutes, and the Wildcats kept the Jayhawks (1-1) at arm's length the rest of the way.

All five Kentucky starters scored in double figures, led by Lamb with 17. The Wildcats took advantage of their edge in the frontcourt, as Terrence Jones had 15 points with seven rebounds and four blocks, and Anthony Davis had 14 points with six rebounds and six blocks.

Tyshawn Taylor led Kansas with 22 points despite shooting 3 for 13. Thomas Robinson added 11 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 3:31 left.

The Wildcats (2,054 wins) added to their relatively slim lead over the Jayhawks (2,039 wins) on the all-time victories list.

The meeting was the first between coaches Bill Self and John Calipari since Self's Kansas team beat Calipari's Memphis squad 75-68 in overtime in the 2008 national championship game.
