Kevin Pangos scored 33 points and matched a school record with nine 3-point baskets in his second college game as No. 23 Gonzaga held on for a 89-81 victory over visiting Washington State on Monday.
Pangos hit 9-of-13 3-point attempts as the Bulldogs (2-0) defeated the Cougars (0-1) in the first game of ESPN’s 24-hour College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.
Robert Sacre added 15 points and was 13-of-13 from the free-throw line for the Zags. Elias Harris and Gary Bell added 14 points apiece.
Brock Motum scored 17 points, Reggie Moore had 14 points and Mike Ladd scored 13 for Washington State.
Gonzaga led by as many as 21 points in the second half and was up 75-59 with 5:39 remaining before Washington State erupted with a 14-2 run. DaVonte Lacy made three 3-pointers during the surge, the last trimming the Cougars’ deficit to four points.
Moore hit a 3-pointer with 27.3 seconds left to pull the Cougars within 84-81 but Sacre (three) and Pangos (two) hit five straight free throws to seal the victory.
Former Gonzaga All-American Dan Dickau twice had nine 3-pointers in a game during the 2000-01 campaign.
The Bulldogs made 10 of their 13 3-point baskets in the first half – six by Pangos – and led 41-32 at intermission.
