C.J. Wilcox scored 22 points and Darnell Gant added 18, as Washington stopped Georgia State 91-74 Saturday in the World Vision Basketball Classic, ruining the debut of Panthers coach Ron Hunter.
Wilcox, a sophomore who finished last season with a flourish by posting four double-figure games in March, made 8 of 12 field goals and grabbed six rebounds. Grant was nearly perfect, making 7 of 8 shots, including 2 of 3 on 3-pointers.
Tony Wroten came off the bench to add 18 points and seven rebounds and Terrence Ross scored 11 points. Aziz N’Diaye grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Georgia State’s top scorer was reserve Rashaad Richardson, who hit 7 of 10 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21. Brandon McGee added 17 points and six rebounds for the Panthers.
Washington set the pace early by racing to an 11-2 lead and went on to lead 43-32 at halftime. The Huskies continued their torrid shooting in the second half and had extended their lead to 20 points five minutes into the period.
The Huskies are now 8-2 in season openers under coach Lorenzo Romar.
