Four UCLA players scored in double figures and the seventh-seeded Bruins survived a furious rally by No. 10 Michigan State on the way to a 78-76 victory in a second-round game of the Southeast Regional at Tampa, Fla. Thursday night.
The Bruins nearly blew a 23-point lead, but will meet second-seeded Florida on Saturday. The Gators defeated UC-Santa Barbara 79-51 on Thursday.
UCLA never trailed in the game. It built its biggest lead, 64-41 with 8:26 to play, before the Spartans mounted their rally. Michigan State eventually cut the deficit to 76-73 with 40 seconds to play.
UCLA’s Reeves Nelson then hit one free throw to make it 77-73. Following a pair of missed free throws by Tyler Honeycutt, Michigan State’s Keith Appling sank a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 77-76 with four seconds to play.
Malcolm Lee then hit the first of two free throws to make it 78-76 and the Spartans got the rebound, but Kalin Lucas was called for traveling racing down the court for the potential game-winning shot.
Lee and Honeycutt both scored 16 for the Bruins. Josh Smith had 14 and Nelson finished with 12.
UCLA scored the first seven points of the game and led 42-24 at the half holding Michigan State’s high-scoring Lucas without a point.
