John Shurna added 19 points for the Wildcats (16-10, 6-9 Big Ten), who outscored the Hoosiers 33-12 from 3-point range, and won for the second time in their last 15 conference road games.
Verdell Jones III had 18 points and six assists for Indiana (12-15, 3-11), which lost its fourth straight after it missed four consecutive free throws down the stretch to allow Northwestern to pull away.
With the game tied 57-57, Thompson drained four free throws sandwiched around a jumper over a three-minute span that helped Northwestern to a 66-59 lead with 3:42 left. The Hoosiers rallied and were within one possession with 30 seconds left, but could not score.
In the first half, Thompson scored 12 consecutive Northwestern points – on two 3-point shots, a four-point play and two free throws - to turn a 19-16 deficit to a 28-22 lead with 6:14 left in the first half.
The Wildcats, who defeated the Hoosiers 93-89 on Jan. 9, led by as many as 11 before settling for a 40-30 halftime edge and 7-0 advantage in 3-pointers.
