Harrison Barnes scored a game-high 20 points, fellow freshman Kendall Marshall added 18 and No. 21 North Carolina held off Clemson 64-62 to notch a key ACC road victory Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tar Heels (18-6, 8-2 ACC) led by as many as 11 early in the first half, but the Tigers cut it to 28-22 at halftime and led four times in the second half. It was tied at 51 with 3:20 left, but Marshall made seven of eight foul shots down the stretch to help North Carolina seal it.
Sophomore John Henson added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who maintained their hold on second place in the ACC and moved within one game of league-leader Duke, which plays at Miami on Sunday.
Demontez Stitt had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Milton Jennings added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers (17-8, 6-5 ACC), who lost at home for the first time since Nov. 30.
North Carolina has won 11 of the past 12 meetings.
