Peyton Siva’s layup with four seconds left lifted No. 19 Louisville to a 55-54 victory over West Virginia at the KFC Yum! Center on Wednesday.
Chris Smith led the way with 15 points and Siva finished with 14 for the Cardinals (16-4, 5-2 Big East), who narrowly avoided back-to-back losses for the first time.
The Mountaineers would go nearly 14 minutes without a field goal before Dalton Pepper drained a 3-pointer to pull it within 53-52 with 1:39 left. Kevin Jones’ jumper 54 seconds later put West Virginia back on top, 54-53. After the Mountaineers missed, Louisville had one last chance and got it to Siva, who connected on the game-winner.
Joe Mazzulla led the West Virginia (13-6, 4-3) attack in the first half, scoring all 18 of his points on 8-of-10 shooting. The Cardinals led 14-7 after the first six minutes before the Mountaineers got going, ripping off a 17-2 burst behind nine points from Mazzulla to cruise into the break with a 37-26 edge.
Down 42-31 with 15 minutes left in the game, Russ Smith and Chris Smith knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers for Louisville to spark a 17-1 run over the next 10 minutes and give it the lead.
