Washington State snapped a three-game losing streak and picked up its first Pac-10 victory of the season, downing Oregon State 84-70 on Thursday at Pullman, Wash.
Tied at 8-8 early in the first half, the Cougars (11-4, 1-2) scored nine unanswered points to build a 17-8 lead. An 11-2 run later in the first half pushed Washington State’s lead to 33-17 on two Klay Thompson free throws with 5:46 left before halftime.
The Beavers (7-7, 2-1), who trailed 42-30 at halftime, would make it interesting in the second half. Lathen Wallace’s 3-pointer with 15:06 left brought Oregon State within 52-46. Calvin Haynes hit two free throws with 8:27 left to bring the Beavers within 59-54.
But Washington State put the game away with a 15-5 run, including Marcus Caper’s layup with 3:26 to go that gave the Cougars a 74-59 advantage.
Thompson led Washington State with 29 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 5 of 13 from 3-point range.
Jared Cunningham scored 18 points with five steals to lead Oregon State. The Beavers shot just 33.8 percent from the field (23 of 68).
Washington State plays host to Oregon Saturday. Oregon State plays Saturday at Washington.
