Robert Sacre scored 17 points and Marquise Carter added 13 as Gonzaga knocked off No. 9 Baylor, 68-64, on Saturday in The Showcase at Dallas, Texas.
Perry Jones III scored 19 points for the Bears (7-1), who suffered their first loss of the season.
The Bulldogs (6-5) held a 29-27 edge at the break and neither team managed more than a three-point lead in the first 18 minutes of the second half. Baylor grabbed a 59-58 edge on Quincy Acy’s free throws with 2:04 left but Gonzaga took it right back on the ensuing possession when Kelly Olynyk nailed a 3-pointer to give them the lead for good.
The poster program for mid-major success over the past decade, Gonzaga had gotten off to a rough start this season against tough competition, dropping four games against ranked teams and a sixth to Pac-10 foe Washington State. The Bulldogs still have to face Oklahoma State, Xavier and Wake Forest before beginning West Coast Conference play.
The Bears have three more against mid-major competition before opening Big 12 play at Texas A&M on January 8.
