Senior guard Dairese Gary had 18 points and five assists in his 99th consecutive start, and New Mexico pulled away in the second half to defeat Arizona State 76-62 Tuesday night.
Freshman guard Kendall Williams scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and forward A.J. Hardeman had 12 points and five rebounds for the Lobos (2-0).
New Mexico led by as many 13 in the first half, but settled for a 35-29 lead at intermission. Arizona State sophomore guard Trent Lockett, who led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, finished with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Lobos freshman Alex Kirk opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but the Sun Devils (0-1) kept the game close and closed to within five with 10:41 remaining.
New Mexico shot 46.4 percent from the field (26 for 56), but was outrebounded, 34-31.
Arizona State, picked to finish fourth in the Pac-10 preseason media poll, shot 40.7 percent from the field (22 for 54), including 5 for 21 from 3-point range. Senior guard Ty Abbott scored eight points.
The Lobos, two-time defending Mountain West champions, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
