Rays 8, Yankees 3: David Price worked seven solid innings and Evan Longoria hit a three-run homer as visiting Tampa Bay kept its grip on the top wild-card spot and eliminated New York from postseason contention.
David DeJesus homered and drove in two and James Loney went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Rays, who have won six straight. Price (9-8), who is in line to start the one-game wild-card playoff on full rest, allowed two runs on six hits to snap a five-start winless streak.
Phil Hughes (4-14) was rocked for three runs on seven hits in two-plus innings for the Yankees, who have dropped three straight and eight of 11 to fall out of the playoff race.
DeJesus put Tampa Bay on top with an RBI single in the third and Matt Joyce delivered a sacrifice fly later in the frame to make it 3-1. New York got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run from Eduardo Nunez but could not manage anything else against Price.
Longoria came up with two on in the sixth and lined a 1-2 fastball from David Huff into the stands in right to push the lead to 6-2. DeJesus followed and made it back-to-back blasts with a shot to right-center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees activated DH Travis Hafner (shoulder) from the 15-day DL and placed LHP CC Sabathia (hamstring) on the 60-day DL. … Rays SS Yunel Escobar (ankle), C Jose Lobaton (elbow) and CF Desmond Jennings (hamstring) all were left out of the starting lineup. Jennings singled as a pinch hitter before being replaced by a pinch runner. … New York honored LHP Andy Pettitte, who announced his retirement last week, before the game.
