Giants 2, Yankees 1: Ehire Adrianza broke up Andy Pettitte’s no-hit bid in the sixth and Tony Abreu drove in the go-ahead run one inning later as visiting San Francisco avoided a three-game sweep against New York.

Javier Lopez (4-2) struck out a pair of batters in relief of Yusmeiro Petit and Sergio Romo worked a perfect ninth for his 36th save. The loss was a critical one for New York, which fell four games behind Cleveland for the final wild-card spot in the American League with only six to play.

Mark Reynolds homered in support of Pettitte (10-11), who was making his final regular-season home start. The Yankees attempted to rally in the eighth with runners on first and third with none out, but pinch runner Zoilo Almonte was thrown out at home, Curtis Granderson struck out and Robinson Cano was tagged out at home to end the inning.

Reynolds staked the Yankees in his first at-bat in the third when he drilled a 2-2 slider from Petit just over the Giants’ bullpen in left-center for the game’s first hit. Adrianza got the run back off Pettitte in the sixth and Abreu doubled off David Robertson in the seventh to plate Nick Noonan.

Pettitte, who announced his retirement effective at the end of the season earlier in the week, did not allow a baserunner until he walked Pablo Sandoval in the fifth. The three-time All-Star did not surrender his first hit until he gave up Adrianza’s one-out solo shot. Pettitte was charged with two runs on two hits over seven frames.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes for a pregame ceremony to honor Mariano Rivera, who had his No. 42 retired. Rivera walked slowly from the bullpen to the mound as the band Metallica played a live version of “Enter Sandman” – the song that has accompanied his entrance into a game for several years. … The Giants improved to 6-14 in interleague action this season. … Reynolds’ homer was his 20th of the season. He is one of only 11 players with 20 homers in every season since 2008.
