Four San Diego pitchers retired the final 19 batters, Fernando Tatis Jr. doubled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, and the Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Friday night in Phoenix.

Rookie right-hander Chris Paddack allowed three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. He was pulled after 88 pitches despite retiring eight consecutive batters following an RBI single by David Peralta in the third inning. Paddack struck out five and walked one in outdueling Arizona's Luke Weaver.

Weaver (0-1) yielded five hits and two runs, striking out eight and walking none in 6 1/3 innings.

San Diego third baseman Manny Machado hit his fourth home run of the season -- an opposite-field shot in the first inning. He also made a spectacular play with no outs in the eighth when he snared a grounder near the bag and whipped a throw to first after taking a few steps in foul territory, easily retiring catcher Carson Kelly.

Paddack was replaced by Gerardo Reyes, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso earlier Friday. Reyes (1-0) retired both batters he faced to end the sixth inning and get a win in his major league debut.

Adam Warren worked two perfect innings before giving way to Kirby Yates, who earned his eighth save in as many opportunities.

San Diego has won the first two games of the four-game series and seven of nine games overall.

Weaver worked up to 97 mph with his fastball, mixing in a changeup and curveball to set down nine in a row until Wil Myers doubled to deep left with one out in the seventh. Tatis followed with a double to the base of the wall in right, giving the Padres a 2-1 lead and chasing Weaver from the game.

Arizona had a runner on third with two outs in the first inning, but Paddack whiffed Adam Jones on a changeup to end the threat. Jones stood at the plate, smiling and muttering to himself.

The Diamondbacks broke through against Paddack in the third. Jarrod Dyson doubled with one out, went to third on a groundout and scored on Peralta's single to left.
