Victor Reyes smacked a bases-loaded triple during a five-run first inning, and the Detroit Tigers' pitching staff made the lead stand up in a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon.

Reyes added two more hits and a run scored while Nicholas Castellanos had three hits and a run scored. Infielder Ronny Rodriguez contributed two hits and a run scored in his major league debut.

Detroit starter Ryan Carpenter suffered a right oblique strain while giving up a home run to Angels catcher Jose Briceno in the fifth. Warwick Saupold (3-1) retired all six batters he faced to pick up the victory. Detroit won three of four in the series.

Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario exited the game after the fourth inning with a left hand contusion after getting hit by a pitch. He was replaced by Dixon Machado.

Home plate umpire Marty Foster departed in the sixth inning after getting hit in the mask by a foul ball earlier in the game.

Ian Kinsler had three hits and a run scored for the Angels. Andrew Heaney (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Castellanos got the Tigers' big inning going with his third double in the last two games. Candelario followed with another double to bring him home. John Hicks delivered Candelario with a single.

A hit batsman and Rodriguez's first major league hit loaded the bases for Reyes, who ripped his bases-clearing triple past left fielder Justin Upton.

The Angels had two runners on and one out in the third, but Carpenter struck out Mike Trout and got Upton on a comebacker. Los Angeles had two runners on and no outs in the fourth, but once again Carpenter responded by retiring the next three batters.

Briceno's second homer of the season leading off the fifth proved to be a double whammy for Detroit when Carpenter clutched his side after releasing the pitch. But Saupold was effective after a quick warmup.

Carpenter finished the game with one run allowed on five hits, striking out three.

Reyes scored on Niko Goodrum's double in the sixth to make it 6-1. Los Angeles scored in the eighth on Trout's RBI single.
