Twins 5, Indians 3: Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia each recorded a pair of hits and knocked in two runs as visiting Minnesota salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Joe Mauer added two hits and scored three times for the Twins, who held on as Glen Perkins worked around two hits in the ninth to earn his 19th save. Minnesota’s Pedro Hernandez (3-1), recalled Sunday from Triple-A Rochester to replace scheduled starter Mike Pelfrey, allowed two runs on three hits and six walks over five innings for the win.
Drew Stubbs belted a solo homer while Jason Kipnis contributed three hits and an RBI for the Indians, who saw their four-game win streak end. Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco (0-3) yielded three runs on six hits and four walks through 4 2/3 innings.
Mauer doubled with one out in the first inning and scored two batters later when Willingham singled to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. The Indians loaded the bases with three walks in the second and managed only one run on Yan Gomes’ sacrifice fly that tied the game 1-1.
Kipnis put the Indians ahead with a run-scoring double in the third, but the Twins took a 3-2 lead on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Arcia and Trevor Plouffe in the fifth. Willingham extended the advantage to two with an RBI single in the seventh before Stubbs answered with a blast to left-center field in the bottom of the frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pelfrey was scratched from the start and placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain. … Cleveland leadoff batter Michael Bourn had three infield singles. … The Indians start an 11-game road trip in Baltimore on Monday and Minnesota is at Miami for interleague games Tuesday and Wednesday.
